By-Election Gamble Pays Off A

client who staked a record £90,000 in a
William Hill betting shop in Central London on the
Conservatives to win the Crewe by-election has won
his bet. The man, who
works in the legal profession, turned his stake
money into £94,500 after betting £40,000
at 1/16 and £50,000 at 1/25. "He works in the
legal profession, and certainly had us bang to
rights!" said William Hill's spokesman Graham
Sharpe. 2This was the
biggest bet ever struck on a by-election and
although it may seem a relatively modest profit to
make from such a massive wager, it represents a
rate of interest of some 5% for loaning us the
