Harness Racing Comes To Hereford

Horse racing with a difference is coming to Hereford Racecourse this summer.

The harness racing season in Britain was beginning this week and, for the first time, the racecourse will host a fixture.

The event on Sunday 13 July, 2008 which comprises eight races run under the auspices of the British Harness Racing Club, is an experiment.

If it is successful, there could be further meetings in the future. The day is certainly one that we hope the Herefordshire public will support. With harness racing being particularly popular around the Welsh borders, we are hopeful of a good crowd for the inaugural day.

The Racing Club are very keen on the new venue, especially after some trial runs last autumn.

The races on 13 July will be run over a little more than one mile starting near the leisure centre. As this will be the first time that a fixture has been held at Hereford Racecourse and it is therefore a little bit of a novelty, there will be no handicapping on distance.

Another factor that will come into play is that the vast majority of harness races are run 'left-handed'. Hereford Racecourse is, of course, 'right-handed', so that's another point of difference.

After this afternoon's National Hunt racing, there is one more meeting at Hereford before the summer break. That comes on Sunday 22 June, and it's the biggest fixture of the year - Ladies' Day which this year is supported by Heros Racehorse Rehoming.

One change in the sport of jump racing in Herefordshire this week was the handover by Michael Scudamore snr to his grandson Michael jnr at the family's Bromsash stables.

Good luck to the new trainer, whose brother is the well-known jockey Tom, and we look forward to welcoming many more of the yard's horses to Hereford Racecourse in the future.

The next racing at Hereford Racecourse is Ladies' Day on Sunday 22 June. Grandstand admission is £17. Accompanied children aged under 16 enter free of charge.
