Set For £5000 Payout A man who refused
to accept his doctor's prognosis that he would be
dead within a few months and decided to bet against
it with bookmakers William
Hill will
collect £5000 on Sunday. Jon Matthews has
had literally the bet of his lifetime with William
Hill, taking odds of 50/1 to a £100 stake that
he will remain alive until June 1, 2008 - at which
time he will become by his and his Doctor's best
estimates the patient to survive longest after
being diagnosed with the killer disease,
Mesothelioma. Jon, from
Bedfordshire and in his late fifties, was diagnosed
as being terminally ill in early 2007. His doctors
told he him he was unlikely to survive until the
end of the year. He contacted William Hill in
October to ask whether they would be prepared to
take a bet from him that he would still be alive on
June 1, 2008. "We had never
been asked to accept a bet of this nature before,
but as Jon approached us directly and was adamant
that it would give him an additional incentive to
battle his illness, we decided to offer him the bet
he wanted." said William Hill's spokesman Graham
Sharpe. "Never, in thirty
years in the business, will I have been so pleased
to pay a winning client £5000." Where
