2008 Horse Racing -
Great Start For Matt Sheppard Eastnor trainer
Matt Sheppard has set off at a canter in the new
National Hunt racing season. By his own high
standards, last term wasn't the greatest, with a
final tally of nine winners. But in the
opening month of the 2008/9 jumps season, he's
already put four on the scoreboard. Even this
early, he must be hopeful of his best year to date
come next spring. The latest
victory was courtesy of Strong Weld in a beginners'
chase at Hereford
Racecourse's
sister track at Uttoxeter. The 11-year-old
was making his debut 'under rules' following a
particularly successful few months
point-to-pointing. Another
Herefordshire horse in sparkling form is trainer
Richard Price's Desert Lover. A win at Ludlow
in the middle of the month was followed by another
in a novices' handicap hurdle at Stratford for the
Ullingswick stable. May isn't a month
when Venetia Williams's horses are out in big
numbers, and it's a rarity to see them running at
the picturesque Lake District track at
Cartmel. The Kings Caple
trainer's first runners there since 2005 brought
reward over the Bank Holiday weekend when the filly
Sharp Dresser won a novices' hurdle
race. With a little
under four weeks to go, general admission tickets
are selling well for Hereford Racecourse's Ladies'
Day. There is also some limited availability for
tables in Silks restaurant, with visitors advised
to book their places soon. The races on
Sunday 22 June include the richest event of the
year at the racecourse the £15,000
Biotal Equine Gold Supporting Heros Handicap
Hurdle. After the
professional horse racing is over at 5pm, there is
a charity race at 5.30pm for Heros. After that,
there is live music from Take That tribute act Take
That 2. There are also prizes, courtesy of Planet,
for the 'best dressed lady' and 'best hat'. The
event ends at 7pm. The next racing
at Hereford Racecourse is Ladies' Day on Sunday 22
June, 2008. The first race is currently due off at
2pm. Alternatively,
