After the professional jockeys have retired to the Weighing Room, they will take part in a race on the flat to raise funds. One of them, Tom Connors, didn't know how to ride a horse four months ago, and he's lost a stone each month in that time to make the correct weight for the race. He, along with about 11 colleagues, will be finding sponsorship of up to £1,500 each. It's not the first time that Tom and wife Kath whose background is in the horse racing industry - have been in the spotlight. They found fame in 2001 when winning £1 million on the National Lottery in the Christmas Eve draw. A horse that knows his way around Hereford Racecourse is also taking part in the charity race. Yeoman Sailor won a hunters' chase at the racecourse, while his last race 'under rules' a novices' chase - was also here way back in 2000 when Cheltenham Gold Cup winning rider Jim Culloty was on his back. The 14-year-old will be ridden by Kevin Bell, husband of the Heros charity founder Grace Muir. Before racing begins on Sunday 22nd, there will be a parade of former racehorses, led by Monsignor, which won twice at the Cheltenham Festival and looked a great prospect for the Gold Cup before injury ended his racing career. The Heros charity offers a new career and future to former racehorses leaving the racing industry. The horses are re-schooled, and Heros has established a reputation for matching the right horse to the right owner. Immediately after the charity race on Ladies' Day, there is live music from Take That tribute act Take That 2. There are also prizes during the afternoon, courtesy of Planet, for the 'best dressed lady' and 'best hat'. The event ends at 7pm. The next racing at Hereford Racecourse is Ladies' Day on Sunday 22 June, 2008. |
