There'll be even more when Royal Ascot starts in the middle of the month. In this part of the world, Herefordshire's ladies don't have to wait too much longer for their chance to get out their finery, dress up and enjoy an afternoon at the races with family or friends. The countdown is truly on to Ladies Day on Sunday 22 June, the major racing day of the year at Hereford Racecourse. It's the day after the royal meeting in Berkshire finishes. The races include the richest event of the year at the racecourse - the £15,000 Biotal Equine Gold Supporting Heros Handicap Hurdle. After the professional horse racing is over at 5pm, there is a charity race at 5.30pm for the Heros re-homing of racehorses charity. Following that, there is live music from Take That tribute act Take That 2. There are also prizes, courtesy of Planet, for the 'best dressed lady' and 'best hat'. The event ends at 7pm. The national focus may be on Flat racing, but summer jumping continues apace. The juggernaut that is Eastnor trainer Matt Sheppard's start to the 2008/9 jump racing season just keeps rolling along. The latest winner was Jomelamin in a handicap hurdle race at Wetherby Racecourse. Ironically, the horse he beat into second place was ridden by my husband Lee! Bromsash's Michael Scudamore has got off the mark in his training career. But the winner came, not over jumps, but on the Flat at Haydock Park on Merseyside. Directa's Digger was the horse that did the business. Ullingswick's Richard Price has also been enjoying success on the Flat. Barons Spy won a sprint race at Hereford Racecourse's sister track at Bath. |
