Jon Matthews made literally the bet of his lifetime with William Hill, taking odds of 50/1 to a £100 stake eight months ago that he would remain alive until June 1, 2008 - at which time he would become by his and his Doctors' best estimates the patient to survive longest after being diagnosed with the killer disease, Mesothelioma. Jon, from Bedfordshire and in his late fifties, was diagnosed as being terminally ill in early 2007. His doctors told he him he was unlikely to survive until the end of the year. He contacted William Hill in October to ask whether they would be prepared to take a bet from him that he would still be alive on June 1, 2008. "We had never been asked to accept a bet of this nature before, but as Jon approached us directly and was adamant that it would give him an additional incentive to battle his illness, we offered him the bet he wanted." said William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. "Never, in thirty years in the business, have I been so pleased to pay a winning client £5000." |
