The 32-year-old suffered a finger injury while fielding, but was able to bat again after the Proteas decided not to enforce the follow-on against an outclassed Bangladesh side who trailed by 308 on first innings. Kallis' slight sprain to the fourth finger of his left hand happened when he attempted a difficult catch to dismiss Nazim Uddin. He went to hospital for a precautionary X-ray but soon returned to New Road to end concerns that he might be a doubtful starter for the Edgbaston Test against England on Wednesday. After he scored an unbeaten 70 in his first knock, Kallis reached 55 not out second time around to help the tourists pile up an overall lead of 453 by closing on 145 for one with AB de Villiers notching an undefeated 79. Bangladesh were rapidly under the cosh when they launched their reply to the South Africans' 429 for three declared and were swiftly skittled out for 121 in 41 overs. Andre Nel, the expected replacement for broken thumb victim Dale Steyn for the forthcoming third Test, took three for 25 in 12 overs while his fellow paceman Makhaya Ntini claimed four for 32. They instantly made life uncomfortable for youthful Bangladesh who slumped to 20 for three when Ntini ripped out Uddin and Junaid Siddique after Tamim Iqbal had been removed in the first over by Nel. Shakib Al Hasan and Naeem Islam managed to nurse their side to 48 for three at lunch before the South Africans turned up the heat again following the interval. Indeed, the first over after the break resulted in Nel ousting Hasan without any addition to the score. The dismissal heralded another quick-fire surge of wickets and they were soon all out after Islam and Musharraf Hossain had been joint top scorers with 25. South Africa had begun the day by facing a further 10 overs before declaring after adding another 32 runs. Kallis added three runs to his overnight score of 52 to finish unbeaten, in an innings which included four fours off 120 balls, and gave him a timely boost after scoring just 24 Test runs in three innings against England. He put on an unbroken stand of 69 with Mark Boucher who also finished undefeated with 24. The closure of the South Africa's innings ended a tough time for Bangladesh who used nine bowlers to little effect. |
