2008 Harmison Call
Was Correct Former England
chairman of selectors Ray Illingworth has backed
the decision to exclude Steve Harmison from the
England team for the third Test at Edgbaston, as
reported by Ladbrokes. Harmison was
widely tipped for a recall for the vital match
against South Africa. The Durham seamer
has 40 wickets to his name in the LV County
Championship this year and was named in the England
squad on Saturday after a four-month
absence. Harmison played
an important part in the 2005 Ashes win over
Australia but has seen his form dip for England
ever since. And Illingworth,
who was England's chairman of selectors between
1994 and 1997, insists Harmison has not done enough
to deserve a recall. "It's a difficult
decision to make but you might as well keep him
(Harmison) out of the side if the pitch isn't right
for him," Illingworth said. "Harmison had two years
where he didn't perform for England and I don't
think he can just walk back into the side. The lads
that have been bowling have been playing well over
the last 12 months. I don't think he's been badly
treated by the selectors. He's got to fight for his
place. He's not actually been all that good from
what I've seen of him." Former England
captain Illingworth berated the selectors' decision
to drop Stuart Broad from the team and feels the
Nottinghamshire seamer will be a vital player in
the next Ashes series in 2009. Durham head coach
Geoff Cook said that Harmison's exclusion does not
signal the end of the bowler's England
career. "It's bad luck on
Steve but I'm sure that he will be ready when
England call on him again," he said. "He's played
well for Durham and he's been bowling as well as he
has been." Bet now at
