2008 Moores Backs
England To Respond Peter Moores has
urged England to "show some character" as they
attempt to bounce back from a desperate opening-day
performance in the third Test against South Africa,
as reported by Ladbrokes. Aiming to make a
positive statement following their 10-wicket defeat
at Headingley, England instead capitulated to 231
all out after winning the toss at
Edgbaston. South Africa will
resume this morning just 193 runs adrift on 38 for
one. It was a
desperate display which leaves England, already 1-0
down, facing the prospect of a home series defeat
just a year before their next attempt at regaining
the Ashes. Bet now at

Moores, whose side also lost the major home series
of last summer to India, has called on his side to
pull themselves out of trouble. "What the team
has to do is show some character and get stuck in,
which they'll do," said Moores. "We have to pull
ourselves tight, get out there and scrap hard to
get ourselves back into the game. The lads have
been in good spirits. We wanted to get more runs
but we know what we've got, so we have got to come
back with something and fight our way back into the
game. We will say we wanted to get more runs, of
course we will, but that's what we've got and we
have to work with that because over the next few
days we have to fight our way back and bowl them
out to put them under some pressure." England's
performance was not helped by further failures for
both captain Michael Vaughan and recalled
all-rounder Paul Collingwood. Vaughan was out
for a first-ball duck while Collingwood scored only
four, increasing the pressure on him as he fights
for his Test future. For now, though,
Moores is not one of those who believes Collingwood
cannot rise to the challenge and said: "He'd have
loved to have got a score, as a few people would
have, but he's another dig in the game, so he's got
a chance. He's a tough bloke, Colly, and he has
played well for England over the last 12-18 months.
He has had a bad run of scores but we support him
because we think he is playing well enough and can
come through that. Paul has served England very
well in the past and I think will do long into the
future." South African
seamer Andre Nel, who was brought into the side as
a replacement after Dale Steyn broke his left
thumb, claimed three for 47 on his
comeback. But he admitted
his first wicket owed more to good fortune after
opener Andrew Strauss trod on his stumps to end a
66-run opening stand and begin England's
capitulation. "We got a lucky
break with Strauss stepping on his wickets."
admitted Nel. "I was about to shout at myself for
bowling down the legside and then all of a sudden
Bouch [Mark Boucher] came running towards
me shouting 'he's out' so I was pretty
happy." Bet now at
