30 July
2008 Only Ten Group
Ones Left Between O'Brien And World
Record Having notched up
his 16th Group One victory today, and his third in
a week, William
Hill have
slashed the odds on Aidan O'Brien breaking the
world record for the most Group/Grade One winners
in a season to 1-3 from 4-7. In 2001, the 38
year old Wexford-man sent out an amazing 23
Group/Grade 1 winners, but he lost his record in
2003 to New York trainer Bobby Frankel, who managed
an amazing 25 Grade victories that
season. Henrythenavigator's
game victory in this afternoon's Sussex Stakes at
Goodwood saw the son of Kingmambo win his fourth
Group One on the spin, making it 16 Group One
victories in 14 weeks for the Ballydoyle-based
trainer. Kate Miller,
spokeswoman for William Hill, said: "This is
becoming monotonous now! Aidan's record this season
is simply sublime, and his 16 victories in 94 days
equates to a Group One win by one of his horses,
every six days or so! There are 14 Group Ones left
in Britain, and five left in Ireland this year, so
it is not insurmountable that Aidan could break the
record with minimal travelling." |
