Punters Expecting Captain To Shine After Wet Weather Gamble

With Britain continuing to experience heavy rain, punters have come out in force to support Captain Gerrard in next week's Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

Brian Smart's colt is known for his affinity to easing conditions, and William Hill have again been forced to cut him to 8-1 from 10-1 today having laid him at a top price of 20-1 in recent weeks.

Former Spanish raider Equiano - who recently completed a move to Barry Hills's Newmarket yard is another that has been well-backed. The King's Stand winner- virtually unknown in the UK before a second to Marchand D'Or in the Prix Gros-Chene now rates as 11-2 second-favourite to notch up his second successive Group One.

Despite a quiet season, Godolphin will be hoping to end a 13-year drought in the Nunthorpe with their flagship sprinter Dandy Man. William Hill report solid money at the five-year-old's current price of 12-1.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hills, said: "The weight of money behind Captain Gerrard is pretty strong and punters are clearly expecting a massive run from Brian Smart's charge. He has shown several times now that he can act on soft ground, but arguably his best performance came in the Palace House Stakes when beating Sakhee's Secret and that was on good to firm ground. Unusually, Kingsgate Native is a pretty good result for us despite being longtime ante-post favourite, and we may find ourselves cheering on the good old jolly next Friday."

Don't forget, Paddy Power also pay out on disqualified winners and official result on all UK and Ireland races.
