2008 Wolverhampton
Sets The Pace With New Series The unique sport
of harness racing returns to the Midlands at a
dazzling pace next month for a brand new
championship series, sponsored by William
Hill. Dunstall Park,
Wolverhampton was the fastest track in the UK
during the 1990's, and the British mile record set
by Stoneriggs JR in June 1994 remained intact when
the 'trotting' circuit was damaged and subsequently
closed at the end of the decade. Following
exciting Trials on the polytrack last week, the
William Hill British Pacing Championship has become
a hot topic in the harness racing world, and
drivers and trainers are holding their breath for
one of the 36 coveted invitations to compete for
the richest pacing prize in the UK, and the
opportunity to break records. "Thanks to
William Hill, the sport is buzzing big-time at the
moment." smiled Ian Pimlott, one of the leading
drivers on the scene who gave the polytrack trial
the thumbs up. The best in-form
pacers in the UK and Ireland will be flying behind
the mobile starting gate on September 12th, 19th
and 20th when they battle at speeds of up to 40mph
in the qualifying heats for a coveted place in the
£12,000 to the winner Championship Final on
September 26th. This special
sporting event will be broadcast live in all UK and
Irish betting shops, and can also be enjoyed by
armchair viewers on Attheraces, free-to-air on Sky
Channel 415. William Hill's
spokeswoman, Kate Miller, said: "Having attended
the recent trials, I can personally vouch that the
sport of Harness Racing is a huge spectacle! The
pace these Standard-bred horses travel is
unbelievable and the times they record in full
flight are not far off those posted by the best
thoroughbreds. Anyone who attends Wolverhampton
next month on any of the four race nights is in for
a true sporting spectacle and for those who cannot
make it; there is the opportunity to watch at home
or in their local betting shop. William Hill are
proud to be involved in Harness Racing and the
£25,000 record prize fund is proof of our
commitment to this wonderful venture." |
