Battered By Hurricane Zarkava Super Filly
Zarkava was this afternoon crowned the Princess of
Paris with a magnificent victory in the Prix de
L'Arc de Triomphe. Rumours of poor
ground, and torrential downpours seemed to dissuade
the backers from supporting the superstar, but as
the day went on and the rain stayed away, punters
finally came to their senses and began wading into
Alain Royer-Dupree's filly in the hour leading up
the off. Kate Miller,
spokeswoman for William
Hill,
explained: "Zarkava couldn't be given away
throughout the morning, and all the money came for
the soft-ground runners. As the day went on the
impetus behind her began to build, and the hour
before the off we were frantic with punters getting
on everywhere they could. She was an amazing
winner, but it was difficult to muster a
cheer." Those defeated
today will be relieved to hear that connections
have ruled out a Breeders' Cup challenge for
Zarkava later this month. Owner and trainer are
still in two minds whether the filly will stay in
training, but William Hill have installed her as
3-1 favourite for next year's Arc. Today's third
Soldier of Fortune now heads the betting at 4-1 for
the Breeders' Cup Turf later this month, with
Youmzain, and the disappointing Duke of Marmalade
both joint second-favourites at 5-1. See more betting
