With polls suggesting that Labour will struggle to finish ahead of UKIP, punters are betting that such an outcome could lead to Brown's downfall and William Hill have shortened their odds from 7/4 (2.75) to 6/4 (2.5) that he will be ousted before the General Election - and now make UKIP 5/4 (2.25) to get more European seats than Labour - who are 11/8 (2.37) to do vice versa, with a tie between the two offered at 11/4 (3.85). "A disastrous showing in the Euro elections could make Gordon Brown odds on to go before the General Election and encourage a leadership challenge." said William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. Alan Johnson has been backed from 4/1 to 6/4 (2.5) favourite to succeed him. William Hill offer odds of 5/1 that Labour will fail to win ten or more seats in the Euro election when UKIP are 5/6 (1.83) to win 15 or more and the BNP are odds on at 2/5 (1.4) to win at least one with the Greens 6/1 to win ten or more. The bookies offer even money that less than 30% of voters bother to turn out for the Euro elections. Labour are now 16/1 to win the next General Election. UKIP (UK Independence Party) could gain a massive boost from smokers in the next General Election as they are the only main political party to have stated in their manifesto that they intend to repeal the highly Unpopular Smoking Ban. |
