Aidan Backed For Record-Breaking Derby Feat

Punters have been out in force to support Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O'Brien in an attempt to saddle the first five home in the Investec Derby at Epsom next month.

Bookies William Hill issued a number of special bets - amongst them, odds of 100-1 that O'Brien can emulate Michael Dickinson's feat in the 1983 Gold Cup and saddle the first five home in the Derby.

Despite the enormity of the challenge, punters have backed the Wexford man to make history, and Hills now offer just 50-1 about a Ballydoyle 'Famous Five'.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: "The racing world was brought to its knees 25 years ago when Michael Dickinson trained the first five home in the Gold Cup and many note it as one of Racing's greatest moments. Already one of the sport's legends, Aidan O'Brien could rewrite history if achieving a 1-2-3-4-5 in a race watched by the world at one of Britain's greatest sporting venues.''

A 1-2-3 looks a distinct possibility for the Tipperary outfit, and single-figure odds of 5-1 represent the chances of Aidan O'Brien training the first trio home, with 20-1 available for the first four.

William Hill also make it a 16/1 chance that Aidan O'Brien saddles the Oaks and Derby winner. A feat he achieved back in 2001 when Imagine and Galileo racked up the double.

Despite the strength of his three-year-old colt division, William Hill feel that an assault by O'Brien on Bobby Frankel's World Record of training 25 Group/Grade One winners could be beyond him. Having offered 12/1 about a successful bid at the turn of the year, the bookies now make it a 16/1 chance that Aidan O'Brien can notch up 26 (or more) Group or Grade One wins throughout the year.
