Odds Slashed In Hung Parliament Betting

Bookies Paddy Power have cut their odds on a hung parliament to just 9/4 (3.25) as the pollsters show a continuing slide for David Cameron's Conservatives.

With a hung parliament likely to hamstring the country at a critical time in its recovery, Paddy Power also offer odds of 5/1 that two General Elections are called before the year is out. Should David Cameron win with a narrow majority, the Tories may decide to call a second election to give them the power to get things done.

The Conservative slip has also seen their odds drift in this year's Election betting to 1/12 (1.08) with Labour back in to 6/1.

Electoral Reform Wagers

Elsewhere in politics, Gordon Brown's sudden desire to look at electoral reform has Paddy Power offering 7/4 (2.75) that the public will be given a referendum on the issue before 2014.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: "It's only ever the parties who have no power or are losing power that seem to show an interest in electoral reform. This may be a sign that Gordon Brown knows he's heading to defeat under the current system and reform would be Labour's quickest hope for a return but should Cameron make it to Downing Street, we're not sure the Conservatives will be interested in changing a system that will have returned them to power any time soon."

With the pollsters currently showing a Tory lead of anywhere between seven and sixteen points, Paddy Power are also betting on which company will emerge victorious as the most accurate pollster. YouGov are the 11/4 (3.75) favourites, closely followed by ICM at 3/1.

UKIP (UK Independence Party) could gain a massive boost from smokers in the next General Election as they are the only main political party to have stated in their manifesto that they intend to repeal the highly unpopular smoking ban.
