Betting Euro 2008
Final Set For £20m Betting
Record The
Euro
2008
final between Spain and Germany could produce the
first ever betting turnover of £20 million on
a single international match, predict bookies
William
Hill. William Hill fear
a Spanish victory, with one punter set to make a
profit of £315,000 should they win the
tournament after staking £55,000 on them to
beat Russia in the early stages of the event, which
they did to land him a £40,000 profit - and a
further £50,000 on Spain to win the whole
thing at odds of 11/2, which will win him a further
£275,000. "The client is a
businessman from the south of England who was
clearly undeterred by Spain's reputation as the
great under-achievers of European football." said
William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. "The tournament
has captured the imagination of football fans and
punters alike and there is no reason why the
betting turnover should not reach a record
£20m industry-wide." William Hill have
taken two bets of £20,000 and another of
£17,850 for Germany to win. "These two have
been the best backed sides throughout the
tournament, but if we could choose we'd opt for the
Germans to save us from what will be the pain in
Spain." William Hill now
make Spain 8/13 (1.61) favourites to lift the
trophy, with Germany quoted at 5/4
(2.25). Euro 2008
